Ingredients

  • 1 round country-style bread loaf
  • 250 g L’Ancêtre Organic Salted Butter, softened
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh rosemary (or 1 tsp dried rosemary)
  • 1 food-grade cotton candle wick

Beautiful, fun and delicious, this butter candle turns a rustic loaf into a show-stopping appetizer. As the flame gently melts the seasoned butter, the warm bread soaks up its rich flavours of garlic and rosemary. Perfect for entertaining, it’s a simple recipe that’s sure to impress your guests.

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Slice off the top of the bread loaf and set it aside. Remove some of the bread from the centre, leaving about a 2 cm (¾-inch) border to create a bowl.
  3. In a bowl, combine the softened butter, garlic powder and rosemary until smooth.
  4. Spoon the butter mixture into the bread bowl and smooth the surface.
  5. Insert a food-safe candle wick into the centre of the butter, leaving about 2 to 3 cm exposed.
  6. Place the loaf on a baking sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, just long enough to warm the bread without completely melting the butter.
  7. Remove from the oven and light the wick for a few minutes to gently melt the butter. Blow out the flame before serving, then pull apart pieces of bread and dip them into the melted butter.

For extra flavour, customize the butter with fresh thyme, chives, grated Parmesan or a pinch of chili flakes.
